Our Core Tenets

What We Believe

Christian Centrism seeks to restore the proper relationship between our Christian faith and our role as citizens.

We are about putting kingdoms in their rightful place: the Kingdom of God first and earthly kingdoms second.

Our first calling is to follow Jesus Christ by loving God, serving others, sharing the Gospel, making disciples, and caring for God’s creation.

Our allegiance to our nation, and the constitution that formed it, is important, but never more important than our allegiance to Christ and His kingdom.

Because of this, we are pragmatic about government.

We know that no form of government is perfect, and no culture can ever truly be “Christian.”

We remember that well-meaning Christians throughout history have tried to bring about virtuous “Christian” societies through earthly government. But those were never truly successful - and often led to tragedies.

For these reasons, we Christian Centrists reject Christianity-through-government.

We believe the Church should remain independent in order to serve as the moral conscience of society, something it can’t do if it’s seeking political power for itself.

We believe Christians should speak courageously about right and wrong but resist the urge to claim a divine mandate for any party, platform, or personality.

We believe that Christians should be active citizens, doing our best for the common good, but never insist that one side is all good and the other side all evil.

And we believe Christians should work across parties, platforms, and personalities to demonstrate loving collaboration as brothers and sisters.

Because of these beliefs, we Christian Centrists are free to explore practical ways to solve vexing problems, since most political issues involve tricky good-versus-good and bad-versus-bad tradeoffs.

The genius of the Constitution is that we separate the powers of government so that no one person or group becomes too powerful while ensuring basic rights for all people.

Furthermore, the United States Constitution, as dear as it is to us American citizens, is not a Christian document, per se. It is a brilliant construction of government based on a realistic appreciation of human nature. But the Constitution is not inherently Christian – only the Bible is!

What we do have is a guaranteed right to worship as we please. And that’s why we embrace our form of government – we have the freedom and security to live out our Christian way of life, and for the Church to serve openly as the hands and feet of Christ.

Christian Centrism is about embracing reality here on earth today, while pointing to – and serving – the coming kingdom that will someday, finally, be the perfect government for a holy nation.
